Embracing discomfort

How do we evolve and develop as human beings? As societies? How can we trust the process and choose to stay in the storm when it is so much easier to stay put in the comfort zone, doing as we always have?

These are questions I’ve been pondering lately. Both at a personal level and with regard to my research on sustainability transformations in Norwegian municipalities. One thing is certain: Transformations are uncomfortable. Or to use another well-used quote: Change/growth/magic happens outside your comfort zone.

One thing is intellectualizing this, cause it does make a lot of sense – quite another is to act on it. To deliberately tap out of deep-rooted habit patterns. Doing so depends on deliberate action. On courage. On putting in the effort. Trusting that the discomfort will pass and that we get out on the other side transformed.

Having a supportive environment is also helpful – or even better, doing it together as a collective team. It might also be helpful to practice contentment (Santosha). In my experience, practicing contentment can fundamentally change how we relate to a specific situation. It makes me able to tap out of that first reactive/habituated response and instead look objectively at the situation and deliberately choose to let go and instead focus on what’s good.

I turned 30 yesterday and spent some time going inward and reflecting on what I want to focus on in the coming months. My vision for the rest of 2024 is to practice contentment and find joy in every moment. This vision is deeply connected to my values and what I want to achieve in this life. Who I want to be and how I want to show up.

Maybe you can find some quiet time and reflect on these questions for yourself?

What is important for you?
What is your personal vision?
How can you embrace the discomfort you face in personal transformations?
How can we collectively embrace the discomfort of sustainability transformations in societies?

I would love to hear your thoughts.
